If you’re anything like me then you know how easy it is to get sucked into home decorating shows and renovation inspiration. You love a good before and after and secretly are BFFs with Joanna Gaines. I would have loved having her on speed dial during our home renovation.
We started updating this home when we first bought it in 2016 and we still have cabinets without doors, patched holes needing paint, and a few (very) outdated fixtures. But turning this home into my dream house has been so rewarding. Now I know what it feels like to become addicted to home renovation and I’m not sure we will ever be able to just buy a move-in-ready home again.
Are you ready for this before and after kitchen remodel?
I’ve never felt ready to show before and after photos since most rooms still have something that still needs to be done. But today I’m going to reveal one of the most used rooms in our home and possibly the one that underwent the most change! The kitchen remodel!
Do you see how dramatic a change this room underwent and how it’s going to be hard if (more like when) we move from this house!! Let’s be real, someone will have to drag me out because I love this kitchen so much.
As far as the process goes we took out all the original cabinets that had white veneer peeling off the drawers and doors and install our own custom made cabinets that my husband built himself. We brought them all the way up to the ceiling and added crown molding. I personally prefer this so I don’t have to dust the tops of cabinets and it adds a luxury feel to the kitchen. We also repurposed the old cabinets into the laundry room and the garage.
Funny story…the weekend we planned to remove the old cabinets and get the new ones installed also happened to be the same weekend that Hurricane Matthew rolled in. While we were without a kitchen we were also without power to work on the kitchen for a good 24 hours. It made for an interesting weekend and creative ways to get work done while we waited for the power to come back on.
When we moved into the house there were no working appliances except the cook-top. We bought all new appliances and moved the cook-top from the island to the perimeter counter under the other window and installed an exhaust hood.
We had a local company install the granite countertop and we chose two slabs from a wholesale warehouse in Raleigh that shipped them to our installer. The granite is colonial white which we have now used in multiple other rooms (and at the beach house). My advice when choosing granite is to personally select your slab(s) since they can vary so much. The paint color is Valspar September Fog from Lowe’s and I’m not sad that it is no longer that sunny shade of yellow (no thank you).
We pulled inspiration from Houzz and my husband and I shared an ideabook where we posted all our thoughts for the kitchen remodel. Houzz allowed us to look for specific paint colors, fixtures, and features of the kitchens so we could decide how we wanted it to look and function. My husband travels a lot and his mail tends to pile up along with other papers he hasn’t “put away” so I installed a magazine rack from Home Goods near the door and I just put anything that is his in there and he is responsible for going through it. It keeps papers off the counter and looking neat.
This is the first of many reno reveals that I’m hoping to share! Between this house and our newly remodeled beach house I’ve get tons of before and after stories!! I can’t wait to show you more! Until next time I’ll leave you with a list of details from this kitchen remodel.
